Night On The Town!

g'day mates!

hopefully everybody is keeping warm in this oh-so-intense cold. it's serious out there! so bundle up.......
you might be wondering what we've been up to this week (or maybe not!) well, in any regards we've been busy trying to get the luscious Nola Darling Mini Mix Tape together for y'all, go corporate, juggle side hustles, and stay sane in these crazy days.....

speaking of "daze"....last night, .Ace and I trotted downtown in our absolute finest to the Prophecy Magazine 10th issue release party (which i wrote a piece for....check the J*Davey story!). Unfortunately, not only was the line ridiculously loooooooong but we missed most of the fun stuff (except for a nice set by Sujinho and Cassiano).

you know how you feel when you see somebody you don't want to see with someone you don't want to see them with? yeeeeah, that was another part of the evening that was neither enjoyable nor worthy of considerable mention, uhh......besides this one. ok, enough.

anywayz, it was dope to see my name in print and kick it with our boys AB/NRML even though they left without saying goodbye. boo....

then we were off to Fat Baby where i was told by one young man that i shouldn't wear my Virgen de Guadalupe scully nor shake hands "like a dude", cuz i'm "too pretty".........cafe WHA?!

    La La La La La

ewwww....it's so ugly in New York right now, and believe it or not- i'm actually one of those people who actually really dig the rain. aw well, at least i have the past weekend to remind me of how dope the city can be. everybody who's fam already knows we claim Sugar Hill as our turf....still, we got mad love for Brooklyn (which means you should come to our BACK 2 BROOKLYN party at Supreme Trading party tomorrow! everyone else is! what, you wanna be too cool for school and miss out???!! wack......)

yes ma'am, this weekend i crashed in Williamsburg in the swankiest of digs that i can only aspire to. truly- shit was original....don't wanna speak on it too hard and start getting teary eyed. yeah, it was like THAT! then, i crashed in Greenpoint after the Kudu show at Studio B. very scenester oriented....still very fun, very crazy.....i also randomly talked to DJ Spooky about Black folks hanggliding in Costa Rica.....but i digress.....hanging out with folks from my past (kicked it with high school friends from cali all weekend) took me back to the 90s before reality television got out of control and i was still watching this show.....

i know i've been fantasizing about the old school a whole lot lately, but that's not to say that i'm not having the best of times where i am now.....real talk....the Interntional Rude Gals club/Nou La/Nola Darling cooking that good shit in the kitchen....whatchu know bout BEANS and RICE?!

    xo

    "'Cause I Love It!"

but i ain't too crazy bout Jeezy....seriously though, this chick is missing a time when Hip Hop from the ATL wasn't all about snapping yo fingas and doing yo step. quite frankly, i don't want to do it all by myself.... i want folks wit me, making me feel good- not sore from having thrown my neck back to far as i attempt to lean and rock with it (although the dance is kinda fun....but we grown folks. how we gon' be acting like the chillen?!!)

Khujo, T-Mo, Big Gipp, and Cee-Lo and my favorite pink pirate out of T-dot join forces here for the "Slam!" soundtrack (we going back to the height of the Saul Williams/Jessica Care Moore/Tish Benson era of spoken word). plus, Cee-Lo pre-Gnarls Barkley is amazing to see. how come the world slept on such a talent for such a loooong time??! thank God, he's finally getting his props!

also, check Esthero's version of "The World I Know" off her debut "Breath From Another"....now that's my shhh!

have a great weekend in the rain nyc AND look for us in the streets....cuz you betta come to our party next week (see posting below)!

I Remember Way Back When (and Everybody Say).......

back in the summer of ' 88, i was rocking pigtails, still screamed with excitement over Fraggle Rock, and idolized my uncle Derrick with a passion! Check it: he was sixteen and cool as shit: he had a dope flat top a la Kane with a blond streak set dead in the middle a la Kwame (it was cool then, okay?!!)

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

It wasn't quite "the bone age" in Jackson, Mississippi (where Derrick and my Pops are from), but D was definitely a trendsetter in his high school.

More importantly, he was bumping THIS dude HARD that summer; at 5, i knew all the words to "Children's Story" backwards and forwards.....still it was really THIS song and video that changed everything for me.

    "Here's an oldie but goodie!!"

Visions of Ricky D in all that gold with the eyepatch and all the fly girlies wining in ripped denim were almost too much for my little mind to wrap around! I wanted to BE all a' them too.....well, not necessarily Slick Rick persay....but a dope emcee and a fly girlie all wrapped into one!

till next time children! "get ahead and accomplish things," "don't disrespect ya mummy," AND "scream whoopee-do/go for yours cause dreams come true!"

    Musica Mi Gente!

    (yawn)

G'day to all two of ya's (hi mom, hi dad)! I'd like to take a break this rainy foggy Monday morning (at least that's what it looks like in Sugar Hill) from bashing and/or praising individuals who shall at this point continue to remain nameless due to a plethora of reasons (oh you know all the "itys" .....liability, confidentiality, honorability....um, i don't think that's a word. but you smell me?)

I wanna throw a little salt in the wound today (tee hee!) and speak on one of my OTHER interests (besides film).....that interest being: MUSIC, as in.....not my own. Yes indeedy, here's a short list of what 1/2 of Nola Darling (that would be me speaking about myself in third persn) is bumping in her sound system, stereo, and uh...JBL speakers.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

I gotta speak on Lily Allen! Homegirl's killing it right now- check out her cover story in Missbehave! Haven't heard the mixtapes but I just got her British debut "Alright, Still" a few days ago and although at times in gets a bit monotonous( it's like, we get it already!! She's a cheeky White girl who wears Bamboo, loads of gold, flyy trainers, and cusses a lot), she's definitely got some charisma and a point of view....clearly a bit of a badass) Gotta respect her hustle for that! Plus "Smile", "LDN", and "Littlest Things" are hot tunes....that i will be singing with certain Wankstas in mind!

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Kudu! Oh snap......I just recently came up on game when i was at Mixtape Riot at the Canal Room. Never heard the music before that night, but i went home with a sampler and i was hooked. Lead songstress Sylvia is bananas....as is her wardrobe....as is the video for "Playing House" (my jam!). Hell yeah...i'm digging those shits! Also met Trevor Andrew that night and he gave Kudu mad kudos....check out their album "Death of the Party"......go buy it on iTunes or something. I think I should too.....

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

but this dude right herrre! Sir Samuel is a favorite of my dad's and more recently, mine. A member of the Saian Supa Crew from France, Sir Samuel's 2005 album "Vize Pli O" is on that Hip Hop Roots Dancehall Ragga supa dupa irie tip with bangers like "Blackadee" and "Blaspheme" ! And i love it! My dude raps, chants, and sings.....he's ill. I don't know what he's talking about....but i know it's deep. That's all there is to it.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

And then there's this guy: Serge Gainsbourg. He looks kinda sketchy right? Well, i guess you can stand to be a bit scandalous if you bag dimes like Jane Birkin (she's a bit sketchy in this pic too, huh?). That would be Jane Birkin....as in the BIRKIN bag from Hermes. Yes, they named it after her. She was that fly. Anywayz, i've actually been listening to this crazy Serge Gainsbourg dub album (Mauvaises Nouvelles Des Etoiles)! Like, he's just talking over some Reggae tunes....it's bananas, but entertaining.

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting

Last but not least....J Davey. Their debut on Warner Brothers isn't out yet....but you check out their myspace page or website (www.jdaveybaby.com) to hear their shit....that's what I do. I also had the pleasure of sitting down with the duo last month to talk shop and can confirm that they are as cool and real as they sound......and check out that "Mister Mister" vido on youtube....HOT!

    i likey....hopefully you likey....if not, i don't care.....(awww....but you should really likey....at least give it a chance)

    HELL YEAH!

So you know this alleged "documentary" that we've been chatting up so hard over the last several months (or over the past year and a half....if you know us like that)? well....it does indeed exist.....it's just not finished as of yet. See, that's the thing about actually making a film: once you make one of your own, you begin to understand how easy it's NOT. But don't think i'm saying that i'm gonna stop hating on docs or narratives that i think don't measure up to expectation.....naw. I'm still gonna act like the director/producer/actors/director of photography/cinematographer/screenwriters/etc of whatever movie I saw last all could've done something to make their movie hotter than it was.

But as we all know or have at least experienced, sometimes collaboration can be difficult when some folks wanna ignore your calls (damn....going on 3 weeks now!). In cases like those....er......these, one (meaning Ace and I) must distract onself from getting pissed off and threatening legal action (j/k......um, no i'm not). Still, I don't like being in a bad mood...flaky people often have that affect me....so, case in point, we were wonderfully distracted yesterday with an interview we did in Bushwick with a well-known Hip Hop artist who's 1/2 of of a duo that illicits strong reactions in most. I don't wanna just give it away......even though i do just wanna give it away, but if you know some shit about Hip Hop- take a look at our title and take a wild guess. Ideas, anyone?

Anyhoo, we were pretty damn pleased with the way the conversation went. We asked him everything we've been wanting to ask for the last year (since we first linked up in Cape Town) and dude was maaaaaaad honest. Score!

So to ill homie who wants to play ghost on me....don't worry son- I GOT yo # on speed dial. We coming for these suckas! Or, in the words of the late great Professor X of X-Clan (of whom our mystery interviewee is also a fan): SISSSSSSSSSSSSSSSY!
